IV. Somatoform Disorder

A. Somatization:

the expression of psychological distress through physical symptoms

-A person may have psychological problems (depression, anxiety), but display physical symptoms (paralysi/pain)

B. Malingering:

Faking an illness in order to avoid work

-Malingering is not a psychological disorder but somatization is

C. Conversion Disorder:

A person may experience a change in or loss of physical functioning of a major part of the body for which there is no medical explanation
i.e. a person can no longer see at night, or can no longer use their legs
-People with conversion disorder often don't show concern over the problem
D. Hypochondrias (hypochondria):
A person's unrealistic preoccupation with the fear that he or she has a serious disease
-People become absorbed with minor physical symptoms, convinced that they indicate a serious illness
